A lifecycle-cost study of two cranes at Aalto University found that the older machine produced about four times the total lifecycle cost of the newer one over the observation period, with maintenance spend more than double. The gap did not come from the purchase invoice. It came from everything that happened after commissioning.
The total cost of ownership of an EOT crane is the sum of what you spend to buy it, power it, keep it running, inspect it, repair it and eventually retire it. When quotes for the same capacity and span arrive at different totals, the lowest one rarely tells the whole story. This guide shows where the money goes over a crane's working life, how duty class sets the time horizon, and how to compare two quotes on lifecycle cost, with a worked 15-year example you can rebuild with your own numbers.
Our EOT crane price in India guide covers what you pay at the start. This article covers the years that follow.
Total cost of ownership, or TCO, counts every rupee a crane takes from your plant between the day the purchase order is signed and the day the crane leaves service. It treats the invoice as one input, not the answer.
TCO = C_{acq} + C_{site} + \sum_{t=1}^{N}\left(E_t + M_t + I_t + D_t\right) - R_N
In the formula, C_acq is the crane itself, C_site is runway, power feed and installation, E is energy, M is maintenance and spares, I is inspection and compliance, D is the cost of downtime, N is the years in service and R is the resale or scrap value at the end. The first two terms are paid once. The rest repeat every year, which is why a small yearly difference matters more than a large one-time discount.
Two habits distort this calculation in practice. Buyers compare crane prices without comparing duty class, and they treat downtime as an operations problem instead of a purchasing input. Industry guidance points the same way: under-specifying a crane lowers the initial investment but tends to cost more in maintenance and downtime later.
The crane quote often leaves out the runway beams, supporting columns, the power feed (a down-shop lead or busbar) and civil strengthening of an older shed. These are separate lines, and they depend on the building you already have. Low trusses and tight column spacing change the design, and a quote written without a site visit is a guess. Our guide to the EOT crane installation process and cost in India covers timelines and what to budget at this stage.
Energy is usually the smallest recurring line, and it is worth being honest about that. Gujarat's regulator kept scheduled tariffs unchanged for FY 2026-27, and one industry estimate puts the all-in cost for HT industrial users, after fuel adjustment, demand charges and duty, at roughly ₹7.50 to ₹8.50 per unit. Check your own bill, because the effective rate varies by connection.
The control system changes how much of that you use. Two-speed contactor control can pull five to eight times the motor's rated current at start. A variable frequency drive, or VFD, ramps the motor up and down instead. Documented reductions on real crane installations typically fall between 15 and 25 percent depending on duty cycle.
The same source makes a point that surprises many buyers: energy savings alone rarely justify a VFD. The return comes from bundling lower energy use with less brake wear, fewer unplanned stops and better load control.
This is where duty class shows up in the budget. Service conditions have an important influence on the life of the wearing parts of a crane, including wheels, gears, bearings, wire rope and electrical equipment. A crane specified below its real duty wears these parts faster, and each replacement carries parts, labour and a shutdown.
Soft starting also protects the brake. With a VFD the motor stops the hoist before the brake sets, so the brake acts mainly as a parking brake and wears far more slowly. Wire rope deserves a record of its own: replacing it on calendar dates alone can retire rope too early on a lightly used crane and too late on a busy one, so log lift cycles and inspection findings together.
Spares policy matters as much as spares price. In a busy industrial estate, a three-day wait for a hoist part can cost more than the part. Ask where the supplier stocks components and who stands behind them. Our guide on where to buy genuine Kone spare parts in India covers one common branded-parts question, and a service contract ties this together, as explained in the EOT crane AMC cost and what's included in 2026 guide.
Examination reports, load test certificates, safe working load markings and maintenance logs are recurring costs of owning a crane in a Gujarat factory. Gujarat notified its Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Rules, 2025 on 6 June 2025, and they address lifting appliances and require records to be kept available for inspectors. The interval for thorough examination has changed hands between laws, so confirm it with your competent person. The records are covered in our guide to EOT crane safety compliance in India, and a routine between visits is in the preventive maintenance checklist for EOT cranes. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Downtime is the line most plants never write down. The formula is simple: hours the crane is unavailable, multiplied by what an idle bay costs per hour in lost output, labour waiting and late deliveries. Emergency repairs add premium pricing and rushed fixes on top, which is why scheduled work during planned stoppages costs less.
Corrosion is a downtime driver in chemical sheds. Our service teams have seen new cranes in chemical sheds show corrosion on the girder within a year because a standard paint specification was chosen instead of a protective coating. That is a specification decision at purchase that shows up as a shutdown later.
Sheds change. A crane specified for today's load and span may need a higher capacity, a longer runway or a hazardous-area upgrade within a few years. Buying for foreseeable growth is cheaper than retrofitting, and a custom EOT crane built to your actual conditions is one route. At the other end, resale value is small for a crane that has worked hard, so most plants should assume a scrap-level value in the formula.
Every crane is designed for a finite amount of work. Manufacturers commonly quote design lives of about 30 years for light duty classes (A1 to A2), 25 years for medium (A3 to A5) and 20 years for heavy (A6 to A7). Classification names differ between IS, FEM and CMAA, so ask each supplier which class and which number of work cycles they assumed. Our designs follow IS 3177:2020 and IS 807:2006, with IS 4137:2015 applied for steel-works duty.
The structure can outlive the economics. The usual view is that a crane structure lasts about 30 years, but the economic end of life arrives earlier, when fixing and maintaining it costs more than replacing it. One vendor guideline suggests replacement becomes the better investment once modernisation would cost more than roughly 65 to 70 percent of a new crane. Treat that as a rule of thumb, and read our guide on EOT crane repair and modernization before deciding.
For your TCO sheet, set the horizon from the duty class, not from habit. A 15-year horizon is a reasonable planning window for most workshop cranes, with the residual life treated as a bonus.
The numbers below are illustrative assumptions, not Timeskrane prices. Replace each input with your own quotes and logs. The example compares a low-bid crane (A) with a higher-specification crane (B) of the same capacity and span over 15 years.

Crane B costs ₹5 lakh more to buy and about ₹20 lakh less to own. Its yearly running cost is ₹1.7 lakh lower, so the extra purchase cost is recovered in about three years. Energy contributes less than a tenth of that yearly saving. Downtime and maintenance carry the result.
The lesson is not that a higher specification always wins. It is that the answer depends on inputs most plants have never measured. If your downtime cost is low or your crane runs a few hours a week, the gap narrows, and the low bid may be the sensible choice.
A quote becomes comparable when each supplier answers the same questions in writing.

A spreadsheet with one column per quote is enough. Work through it in this order.
If spending is spread over many years, discount future years at your own cost of capital to compare them fairly with today's spend. Run a best case and a worst case for downtime, because that input moves the result most.
