EOT stands for Electric Overhead Travelling. An EOT crane is an electrically powered crane that carries loads along overhead rails inside a workshop, factory or warehouse. If the full form is all you came for, that is the answer. The rest of this guide explains what each word means, how the term differs from "overhead crane" and "bridge crane", and which abbreviations on a quotation change what you actually receive.
Electric tells you the hoist and the crane movements run on electric motors, not hand chains or hydraulics. That is why an EOT crane can lift the same load hundreds of times a shift without tiring an operator.
Overhead means the crane works above the shop floor. Its girders sit on runway rails fixed to building columns or a separate gantry structure, so the floor stays free for machines, stock and people.
Travelling describes the movement. The whole crane travels along the runway (long travel), the hoist trolley travels across the girder (cross travel), and the hook moves up and down. Together these three motions let one crane reach almost every point in a bay.
Both. Indian and British English use "travelling", American English uses "traveling". The machine is identical, and buyers search with both spellings, so you will see them used interchangeably in tenders and catalogues.
If you landed here from a civil engineering or contracts background, note that "EOT" in a construction contract usually means Extension of Time, a claim for extra days to complete work. In the lifting equipment industry the same three letters always point to the Electric Overhead Travelling crane. When a document mentions EOT together with girder, span, hoist or SWL, it is the crane.
In everyday use, yes. "EOT crane" is the common Indian term, "overhead crane" is the general term, and "bridge crane" is popular in North American catalogues. All three describe a bridge (the girder or girders) that rides on runway rails above the work area.
A gantry crane is different because its legs run on rails at floor level instead of resting on the building structure. If you are choosing between the two, our comparison of EOT crane vs gantry crane explains which one suits which layout.
A quotation is full of short forms. Misreading one of them is a common reason a crane arrives with the wrong span or the wrong duty rating.
| Abbreviation | Full form | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| SWL | Safe Working Load | The maximum load the crane may lift in service, normally stated in tonnes |
| Span | Centre-to-centre rail distance | Decides the girder length and the width of the bay the crane can cover |
| HOL | Height of Lift | The vertical distance the hook can travel |
| LT | Long Travel | Movement of the whole crane along the runway |
| CT | Cross Travel | Movement of the hoist trolley across the girder |
| VFD | Variable Frequency Drive | Smooth speed control that reduces load swing and mechanical shock |
| Duty class | Working classification | How severely the crane is used, based on lifts per hour and load pattern |
The operator controls the crane from a pendant push-button station, a radio remote or a cabin. Pressing a button starts the hoist motor, the cross-travel motor or the long-travel motor, and limit switches stop each motion before it reaches the end of its range.

Most EOT cranes in Indian plants are single girder or double girder. Single girder cranes suit lighter loads and simpler buildings, while double girder cranes carry heavier loads, longer spans and continuous duty. Underslung cranes hang from the building roof beams and save headroom. A short overview of each is on our EOT crane types page.
Knowing the full form is the easy part. A manufacturer can only price and design a crane properly when it receives these details:
Our guide to choosing the right industrial crane shows how these inputs translate into a crane specification.
Indian buyers commonly refer to IS 3177, the code of practice for electric overhead travelling cranes and gantry cranes, and IS 807, which covers design, manufacture, erection and testing of cranes and hoists. Always ask the manufacturer which edition it follows and request a load test certificate before commissioning. Your factory inspector or insurer may also ask for it.
EOT crane stands for Electric Overhead Travelling crane. It is an electrically driven crane that moves along overhead runway rails to lift and shift loads inside industrial buildings.
Yes, for practical purposes. EOT crane, overhead crane and bridge crane are different names for the same type of bridge crane running on elevated rails. A gantry crane is a separate type because it runs on floor-level rails.
In construction contracts, EOT means Extension of Time. In lifting equipment, EOT means Electric Overhead Travelling.
Steel plants, foundries, automobile and auto-component units, fabrication shops, cement and power plants, warehouses and heavy engineering workshops all rely on EOT cranes for repeated, heavy lifting.
Choose by load, span, duty cycle and the strength of your building structure. Single girder cranes are economical for lighter work, and double girder cranes are built for heavy and continuous duty.
Timeskrane, the TK Crane brand of Times Industrial Engineers Pvt Ltd, has been engineering industrial lifting equipment since 1988 and building EOT cranes since 2012. Share your load, span and duty details through our contact page, or browse the EOT crane range to see what we manufacture.
